North Whiteley expansion approved for 3,500 homes
July 2018
Winchester City Council granted planning permission for the North Whiteley development, one of the largest housing schemes in Hampshire. The approval covered approximately 3,500 new homes, two primary schools, a secondary school, community centres, playing fields, commercial space and transport improvements. The development is being built in phases on farmland to the north of the existing Whiteley boundary. The approval followed years of planning, consultation and debate about the scale and impact of the expansion. Critics raised concerns about traffic, infrastructure and the loss of countryside, while supporters argued that new housing was urgently needed. The development is expected to be largely complete by 2027 and will near-double the population of Whiteley.
