First houses completed in Whiteley
1988
The first residential properties in Whiteley were completed in the late 1980s, marking the beginning of the transformation from farmland to new town. The early phases of construction established the road network, the drainage infrastructure and the first residential streets. Families moving into the new houses found themselves on a building site, with construction continuing around them and limited local facilities. There were no shops, no school and no community buildings in the earliest days, and residents relied on Fareham and Locks Heath for all their needs. The pioneers of Whiteley established the community from scratch, forming the first residents' associations and pressing for the facilities that would make the development a functioning town.
