Swanwick is the nearest railway station to Whiteley, located approximately two miles to the southeast on the Eastleigh to Fareham line. It is a small, unstaffed station with limited facilities, serving a single line that connects the Meon Valley corridor to the main South Western Railway and South East networks.

The station has two platforms and is served by trains running between Southampton, Eastleigh, and Fareham. From Fareham, connections are available to Portsmouth, Brighton, and London Waterloo via the main South Western Railway services. From Eastleigh, connections run to Winchester, Basingstoke, and London Waterloo on the main line. The Swanwick service itself is relatively infrequent, with trains typically running every thirty minutes during peak hours and hourly off-peak, though timetables change with each revision and should be checked before travel.

For Whiteley commuters, Swanwick station is useful but not ideal. The two-mile distance means that most people drive to the station or are dropped off, as there is no direct bus service timed to connect with trains. Parking at Swanwick is very limited, with only a small car park that fills early on weekday mornings. Residents who want to use the train for a daily commute often need to arrive before seven o'clock to secure a parking space, and some resort to parking on nearby residential streets, which is not always welcome with the local residents who live near the station.

The journey to London Waterloo from Swanwick requires a change at Fareham or Eastleigh and takes roughly ninety minutes to two hours depending on connections. This is feasible for occasional travel but makes Swanwick an impractical station for a daily London commute. Residents who commute to London regularly tend to drive to a mainline station such as Winchester or Southampton Airport Parkway, where faster and more frequent services operate on the main line to Waterloo.

For journeys to Southampton, the train from Swanwick via Eastleigh takes around twenty-five to thirty minutes. This is competitive with driving when the M27 is congested, and some residents use it as an alternative, particularly for travel to the city centre where parking is expensive. The train to Fareham takes around ten minutes, which is quick and convenient for reaching Fareham town centre and its onward connections.

Swanwick station's facilities are basic. There are shelters on both platforms, ticket machines, and step-free access via a ramp. There is no ticket office, cafe, or waiting room. The station has a somewhat isolated feel, positioned between the railway line and the surrounding residential area, and it is not a place where you would want to wait for extended periods on a dark winter evening. The lack of staffing means there is no one to assist passengers, and any issues must be reported by telephone or online.

Improving rail access to Whiteley has been discussed in various transport studies over the years. The idea of a new station closer to the town centre or at Solent Business Park has been raised, but the costs and practicalities of adding a station to the existing line have prevented any progress. For the foreseeable future, Swanwick remains the closest rail option, and Whiteley residents plan their rail travel around its limitations rather than expecting the kind of frequent, convenient service that mainline stations provide.
